Titel: Navigating the tightrope: Risk work in the age of censorship
Abstrakt: Censorship is increasingly making its mark on the UK’s cultural sector; school and public libraries are facing rising requests to remove materials; booksellers are seeing a growth in vandalism and anti-social behaviour, and museum and archive professionals are managing a variety of inflammatory ‘anti-woke’ media campaigns. At the centre of these tensions are cultural sector workers, many of whom work alone and, already stretched due to years of under-funding, have little experience of or support for handling the risks that censorship brings to their everyday work practices. This presentation draws upon the theoretical concept of risk work to explore the hidden costs of censorship or the toll that the (mostly invisible) reconfiguration of professional work is having on both the core functions and the long-term viability of the UK’s cultural sector.
