Changes to storage limits for student accounts in Google
Linnaeus University is now implementing an initial change related to storage for student accounts in Google. Today, students use both Google and Microsoft 365 for storage, where different terms and storage limits have applied over time. This has created an unclear and difficult-to-manage storage environment.
As a first step, the storage limits in Google will be aligned with the same levels that already apply in Microsoft 365. The change will take effect during week 22.
This means that:
- Students currently using more than 5 GB of storage in Google will be assigned 50 GB of storage space.
- All other student accounts will have 5 GB of storage space.
Students who still exceed 50 GB of storage after the change will continue to have access to email and other Google services as usual. However, Google Drive will be placed in read-only mode until the amount of stored data has been reduced below the limit. For affected students, this means that files will need to be deleted or moved from personal storage.
The change applies to personal storage connected to the student account. Other digital environments and services for collaboration, course materials, and shared work will continue to be available and are managed separately.
The work continues
This is part of a broader initiative to create a more sustainable, secure, and long-term digital environment for the university’s users. Additional changes and adjustments related to storage and information management will continue during the autumn.
