Artist in residence collaboration
On November 10-13, LNUC Concurrence welcomed Napoleon Maddox as artist in residence in collaboration with the Cultural University at LNU.
Maddox is a multi-disciplinary hip hop performance artist, writer, and composer from Cincinnati, Ohio and currently residing in Beçanson, France. His work is socially conscious and often builds on history, whether it is the story of Milllie-Christine McKoy, the conjoined twins born enslaved in 1851 in North Carolina (and who also happen to be related to him), or the revolutionary Toussaint Louverture in Saint-Domingue, present day Haiti who was imprisoned by his namesake Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802). Through performance pieces that bring together different music genres, Maddox tells stories about enslavement, revolt, resilience and hope that resonate with the contemporary social issues of racism, oppression, disability, and marginalization. During this first visit, Maddox met with researchers and students as well as representatives for several leading local cultural institutions including the House of Emigrants, Mono (a record store and performance space), the Regional Theatre, and Växjö Art Gallery, and planned several events for his return in 2026.
LNUC Concurrrences is especially happy and grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Helen Hägglund and The Cultural University on this residency. The program brings artists from various backgrounds and with diverse methods and practices to campus to collaborate in creative and interdisciplinary ways with researchers and students. The program seeks to foster an atmosphere of mutual exploration and dialogue. We are looking forward to more opportunities to explore the connections between the past and the present, and between academic research and artistic creativity with Maddox in the coming year.
