Performance lecture: Intercultural Health Encounters

A Performance Lecture is a fusion between a performance and an academic lecture, organized in collaboration between Regionteatern, the Cultural University at Linnaeus University and the LNU Knowledge Environment Sustainable Health.

It is a way of exploring and communicating science through the performing arts, where knowledge is conveyed using the tools of theater. You are warmly welcome to a unique evening where art and science mix, providing space for both experience and learning.

Intercultural Health Encounters: meeting across worldviews, experiences, and cultural backgrounds

In today’s diverse societies, it is common for patients and healthcare professionals to meet across different cultural backgrounds. In an intercultural health encounter, distinct worldviews, life histories, cultural references, and expectations about health and care come together. These moments are more than information exchange, they are relational, emotional, and shaped by the meanings each person brings.

Misunderstandings can arise not only from language differences but also from nonverbal communication, assumptions, different ways of expressing emotions or making decisions.

Intercultural encounters are co‑constructed. Both individuals actively can shape how understanding and care emerge. This requires mutual curiosity, respect, and a willingness to negotiate meanings. In this way, they can contribute to more inclusive and sustainable health systems.
